This morning, I was reading old Advent posts and was drawn to a post from last year inspired by Trish Ryan’s Advent post, I Was Hoping For More.
In it, she referenced a sermon her gave where he talked about the message of Advent saying that the message of Advent isn’t, “Hooray, Jesus has come! Everything will be fine now!” But rather, “The rescue is underway…and Jesus is coming back to complete it.”
Don’t you love that?! With all the rush and excitement, it’s easy to get caught up into thinking that the message of Advent is everything is perfect now. I love the reminder that everything, most likely, isn’t perfect right now, but we shouldn’t be discouraged, because the rescue is underway.
During this time of joy, hope, and expectation, many of us may find ourselves in a place of deferred hope, disappointment, sadness, or loss. If you’re in that place today, don’t lose heart! Be encouraged that “the rescue is underway…and Jesus is coming back to complete it.”
And as Trish says, “That is something I can celebrate.”
The Root of Jesse will spring up…
in him the Gentiles will hope.
