One of the best parts of living in Virginia Beach is the occasional 70 degree day that sweeps through in the middle of February. At the time, it truly feels nothing short of a miracle.
I forgot how much weather can impact my mood until last week, when a mini-warm front blew through. Goodbye snow and bitterly cold temperatures, hello sunshine!
The last time it was warm enough to really play outside, Little B could barely crawl. Last week, he was walking, cruising, and eager to move around and explore to see what this whole outside thing was all about.
I took him outside with a ball and a little bike and you would have thought I took him to Disney World. The squeals in his voice were sounds he had never made before–he was outside, free, and loving it!
As I watched him running around barefoot (this experience also made me realize it’s time to invest in some shoes) I thought to myself about what a gift it is to be outside, free, and enjoying God’s surroundings.
For Little B, playing outside means he’s free from being contained to one room, constantly redirected from electrical outlets, remote controls, computers, anything breakable, and the stairs. When he’s outside, he can just be a boy and “run,” play, and squeal until his heart is content. In so many ways, he’s free and uninhibited (that is until he gets too close to the street).
I think oftentimes when it comes to our faith, we mistakenly assume that God is trying to contain us in a room with all kinds of rules and a list of things we can’t go near. Don’t touch this, don’t go there, don’t do that….When the reality is, life walking with God isn’t supposed to feel confining, it’s supposed to feel FREE.
Yes, there may be some boundaries in place for us to lead and guide us, but don’t ever get caught up in believing that God is only about rules, confinement, and boundaries.
God is about….
Following Him doesn’t limit our lives and box us in. Rather, choosing to follow Him, opens wide the doors to daily experiencing new opportunities and experiences He has for us.
Don’t limit what God wants to do in and through you. Don’t stick yourself in a box and bury yourself with rules and disciplines. Open up the door, let His light shine upon your face and run FREE.
I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
John 10:10 (NKJV)
Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
2 Corinthians 3:17 (NIV)
So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law.
Galatians 5:1 (NLT)
