Christmas is coming…have you heard? Can you tell?
There is so much I loathe about this time of year…
I loathe the busyness–it seems like there are never enough hours to do everything you “need” to do.
I loath the pressure–thanks to Pinterest, we now have to make everything by hand–advent calendars, wrapping paper, any baked good we wish to consume. (Don’t get me wrong, I DO love a good craft!)
And I loath the seemingly endless to-do lists–shopping, wrapping, decorating, Christmas cards (note to self: take picture this week for said Christmas card).
But before I go all Scrooge on you, I will say, there is SO MUCH MORE that I love…
I love the anticipation and joy there is to be found in preparing ourselves for the birth of Christ.
I love that on any given radio station or in any store you hear people like Carrie Underwood and Mariah Carey, singing “Joy to the Word! The Lord is Come!”
I love coming home to a mailbox filled with cards from people I love (cards may be stressful, but they’re SO much fun!)
I love being with my family in church on Christmas Eve singing “Silent Night” by candle light, I tear up every year.
Every year it seems my message is the same: don’t let the stress and busyness cause you to miss out on the joy and wonder Christ has for us this Christmas.
My prayer and my goal this year is to steal a quiet minute each day, take a deep breath, and sit with God and thank him for the gift of His son.
This morning, as I scurried around, unable and unwilling to pause, the song that rang it my heart was this:
Come, thou long expected Jesus,
born to set they people free;
from our fears and sins release us,
let us find our rest in thee.
Israel’s strength and consolation,
hope of all the earth thou art;
dear desire of every nation,
joy of every longing heart.
