His Love For Us

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” John 3:16 (NIV)

As a little girl, I remember memorizing the words of John 3:16. My mom would give us lollipops when we memorized Bible verses, so it was a pretty sweet deal. Since then, I have it heard it over and over again in Sunday school, church camp, TV, the man passing out evangelism tracts on the street, etc…it’s one of the most widely recognized verses in the Bible. Sadly, in its repetition, many times I overlook the life changing meaning behind it—God loved each one of us so much that He sent His Son Jesus Christ to die for us, so that we may live eternally with Him.

In learning what it means to love the Lord, it’s important to begin by looking at why we fell in love with God in the first place. The Bible says, “We love, because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19). The Word of God is filled with scripture that declares the incredible love He has for His children.

Throughout my life as a Christian, there have been times where I feel like I’ve hit a wall—I find myself blindly going through motions and often times forgetting why these things are even important to me. I try to appear as though I have everything together, but really my actions are not in line with my heart. As hard as it is to admit, there are many times when I lose sight of who God is and how much He loves me.

That’s why it’s important to start at the beginning and be reminded of how much God truly loves us! In praying to love God wholeheartedly, we need to start by looking at His unfailing love for us. There’s no better place to start than meditating on the unconditional love that God shows us through the message of the Gospel—that truly is the greatest love story ever told.

As we begin, may we take this week to be reminded of the unconditional love God shows us through the gift of Jesus Christ.

Lord, thank you for the way that you love me. Thank you for saving me through the gift of your Son. I am so unworthy of the love that you bestow upon me, but I are so grateful that You do. As I continue to look at your love for me, may my heart begin to overflow with love for You. More than anything in this world, I long to love you!
