I mentioned this last Wednesday, but last weekend, we were in the throws of packing up our house in Charlottesville. We had only lived there two years, but it is amazing just how much stuff you can accumulate in such a short amount of time. Since this will be our fifth move in five years, we’re getting pretty good at it. But, each time, there are certain things we haul along with us, only to toss up in the attic when we arrive, never to be taken out again until the next move.
Our strategy this time? Everything must go! So as we packed up our house, anytime we saw something we didn’t need or didn’t use, we simply put it on the street with a “FREE” sign on it. We also posted it to Craigslist under the “free.”
Y’all, it’s amazing how much people like free things! All day long, we’d haul something out to the corner and watch as it was quickly snatched up–chairs, rugs, candles, a cake platter, moving boxes…it was great! Our load was lightening and our neighbors were getting things for free!
Who doesn’t like free stuff?! It’s why there are always lines around the corner when Ben & Jerry’s has “Free Cone Day” or on July 11th when 7-11 has free Slurpee day (get it? 7-11!!) We love free!
But when it come to free, there is no greater bargain or gift than the free grace and salvation God has made readily available to us through Jesus. It blows my mind to think that there is nothing we can do or say, and no amount of money we could pay, to earn God’s grace. In spite of our sins and imperfection, this gift–His Grace–is available to us at no cost. It’s free! We simply ask for it and receive it. Talk about amazing!
Take God up on His offer and rest in the gift and freedom of His unending grace.
