Duty & Results

I have a confession: I have a friend crush.  Do you ever get those?  You meet someone, or maybe you’ve known for a while, but never really known well and think, “I just know we should be friends!”  Not only do I have major closet envy, but I LOVE her pins on Pinterest, and let’s be honest, isn’t that the stuff that real friendships are made of?!  (just kidding!)

Monday, my friend crush and I had dinner and I SO enjoyed it!  I’m not always great with meeting new people, but since technically she wasn’t new, it was okay.  We dined over sushi and talked about life, families, marriage, work, and our dogs–all the typical things you’d expect, and I loved every minute!

One thing she said that stayed with me was a quote from John Adams, “Duty is ours; results are God’s.”  Isn’t that great?!

Yesterday, I was quoting it to another friend and said, “The work is up to us, and the results are up to God.”  When we tried to google it to make sure we had the source right, it was apparent that I gave her the “Elizabeth Williams” version, but you get the idea.

Each one of us is called to roles and responsibilities here on earth.  Our job is to obey God, pursue excellence, and diligently do the He’s called us to work.  As for the results?  That’s the beautiful thing–it’s not up to us–that’s HIS job.

And as long as we do our part, no matter how the outcome turns out we can trust that God’s results are perfect and always in our best interest.

And we know that in ALL things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
