Attempting to Unplug

As I mentioned, yesterday we were completely snowed in.  We hunkered down to weather the storm and stayed inside all day.  I don’t know about you, but I love a good snow day!

Everything was going great until around 1:00 when we lost our internet…what in the world is a girl to do?!

Yesterday I learned something about myself: my name is Elizabeth and I am unhealthily addicted to the internet.  I mean, I spend WAY too much time on there.

Once we got over the initial shock of not having email, facebook, Drudge Report, TMZ, Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, Gilt, Google Reader, etc.  We realized that, believe it or not, there IS life beyond the computer screen.

We had conversations, not just across the room, talking over our computers, but real, face-to-face conversations.

We made hot chocolate.

We read books–real books with pages and everything!

We took a family nap on the couch.

We finally put away the soup pot that had been out on the counter for several days.

It was such a breath of fresh air that when the internet finally came back on, I was disappointed, because I didn’t want it to end.

Yesterday was so helpful in making me aware that I spend WAY too much time on my computer.  Don’t get me wrong–computers are great for SO many things, it’s just that I don’t use my time wisely at all.  I hop online to do one little thing and the next thing you know, I’m looking at a Facebook album of someone I don’t even know!  How did I end up there?!

If anyone has any ideas for managing your time on the computer, I would welcome them!!  One of my friends has a phone-free Sunday; an idea which I love!

Our time is so limited and at the end of the day, when my head hits the pillow, I want to feel like I used it wisely and in a way that’s honoring and glorifying to God.  Clearly, I still have a long way to go, but I guess admitting it is the first step…

Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Colossians 3:17
Now devote your heart and soul to seeking the Lord your God.
