On Tuesday I talked a little bit about loneliness. But here’s one thing about loneliness that can actually be really cool…sometimes when you’re away from your family, your friends are out of commission, and even the Real Housewives, the Desperate Housewives, the Bachelor, and the 5th year residents at Seattle Grace hospital are unavailable, rather than wallowing, we can use this chance to step back and simply rest in God’s loving fold.
Growing up in a family with five kids, there were few moments that I had to myself (and even fewer for my saint of a mother). It’s easy to get used to being surrounded by people all the time—home, work, the grocery store, that when we’re finally still and alone, we don’t even know what to do with ourselves, and initially it can feel uncomfortable and awkward…now what…listen to “All By Myself” a la Bridget Jones?
My encouragement to you is this: when, if ever, you find those windows of solitude (whether welcomed or not), take advantage of them! Journal, pray, read, or simply rest in the presence of God. When we allow God to fill the void that lingers within our loneliness, a beautiful thing can happen—we become aware of the truth that though we may feel alone, we are not alone and we are not abandoned.
Take advantage of the opportunity to bring your lonely, weary heart to God and watch as He carries you higher. Watch as he satisfies and fulfills you in ways that would never be able to imagine, and once you experience it, you’ll find, you may never need the Real Housewives again!
