A Morning Routine

Neely standing by the other man in her life….

Breaking News: I think our little dog Neely may have a boyfriend!  TMZ might not have gotten around to covering it yet, but you heard it here first: my dog has a boyfriend.

He lives next door and though they’ve only seen each other through a wire fence, Neely takes her relationship very seriously.

What started out as occasional sightings has turned into a daily morning routine.  Each morning, she asks to go out the back door and rather than going to the bathroom like a normal dog, she sits and waits patiently by the fence for her boyfriend to come down.  He has a doggy door, so he’s free to roam as he pleases.

She doesn’t bark, she doesn’t move, she just sits and waits.  Eventually, he gets the memo and runs down the steps of his porch to see her.  Then they just stare at one another, sniff each other, and run up and down the fence until I tell her it’s time to come inside.  Y’all it is the most bizarre and precious thing all-in-one.

This may sound strange, but as we’re thinking through the new year and settling into new resolves and routines, I think we can all learn something from my little pup: get into a morning routine of seeking and waiting for God.

It can be quiet and simple, but keep it consistent.  When you wake up in the morning, make meeting with God a priority.  And as you sit and wait, just like Neely, you can be confident that He will show up.  Embrace the quietness of the morning and relish in your time with Him–even if just for 5 minutes.  Remember, something is always better than nothing!

Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love,
that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.
Psalm 90:14

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,
and in his word I put my hope.My soul waits for the Lord
more than watchmen wait for the morning,
Psalm 130:5-6
