A Father’s Delight

Last Sunday night, B packed his bags and hit the road for a two-week work trip.  This is the longest B has been away from us, and we are missing him!  He misses us, too, especially Little B.

Thankfully, in today’s world, there are so many ways to stay connected, even when you’re not physically together.  Thanks to the iPhone, B calls us every morning and night to “face time”.  I mean, at this point, we could be our own Apple commercial–when it’s time for Little B’s dinner, I put Little B in his highchair and set the phone on the kitchen table so Little B can play with his daddy–they sing, and talk, and even play peek-a-boo, while I cook dinner nearby.

But face timing isn’t enough–B pretty much wants me to document the day for him in pictures and videos–he doesn’t want to miss a moment.  While others could care less about the details of our day, B wants to know everything–when Little B slept, ate, and played; and any new tricks or developments; how his bottom two teeth are coming in.

Here’s a little sample:

Oatmeal for breakfast–breakfast of champions!

Getting into a little mischief.

Bundling up for a walk.  Summer meets winter.  (As an aside, my grandmother knit that sweater and hat–isn’t it precious?!)
Sleeping through his first parade…
…but waking up just in time to see the race cars with Granddaddy!
Post-bath time selfie.  “Mom, this obsessive picture taking has got to stop!”

No matter what’s going on, B wants a detailed play-by-play.  Not in a “helicopter parent,” controlling way, but because he loves his son.  He delights in every aspect of his life and he genuinely cares about what’s going on.

All week, I’ve been so touched by the effort and energy B makes to stay connected with us while he’s away.  And I’ve been reminded of how similarly, our heavenly father deeply cares about each one of his children.  He wants to be connected with us and He cares about what’s going on in our lives–even the boring, mundane parts.

In God’s eyes, we are loved, valued, and deeply cherished and He genuinely cares about every detail of our lives.  What a gift!

The Lord is like a father to his children,
tender and compassionate to those who fear him.
Psalm 103:13
For the Lord your God is living among you.
    He is a mighty savior.
He will take delight in you with gladness.
With his love, he will calm all your fears.
He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.
Zephaniah 3:17
